Days of Christmas 1-3

If you've read this blog for a while, you know we love birthdays around here. We like throwing a special party for each boy that celebrates them, their unique interests, and show them how much we love them. The Advent season culminating with Christmas is our opportunity to do the same thing with Jesus as the guest of honor. In the hustle and bustle of the commercialized Christmas holiday, it's easy to lose sight of what this season is all about. Our advent activities each day are an opportunity for us to be spend a little extra purposeful time together as a family, to have conversations that keep the focus on Christ, and to prepare our hearts and our home for the most important birthday of the whole year.

Jackson was so excited to see the arrival of the Advent calendar this year! He doesn't mind at all that most of the activities are the same as the ones we've done before--in fact he loves it and looks forward to his favorites year after year. And for the first time this year, Andrew sort of "gets it" and also looks forward to opening the door each day to see what fun it holds.

Monday, December 1st
Happy first day of Christmas Jackson & Andrew! Santa will be here in just 24 days! We want you to always remember that Christmas is really all about Jesus’ birthday. Find the present in the bag under the tree and unwrap it to learn more about the very first Christmas. Afterwards, help Mommy set up the big nativity set!

In the bag, the boys found their toy nativity set and story of Jesus' birth.

They divvied up all of the characters and acted out the story while I read. Well, Andrew didn't really get it so Jackson was happy to take over help him with his characters.

Tuesday, December 2nd
Happy second day of Christmas Jackson & Andrew! Santa will be here in just 23 days! We’re going to change things up tonight by taking a bath BEFORE dinner. Eat dinner in your PJs while you watch the Toy Story Christmas program and Charlie Brown Christmas on TV!

The Toy Story movie was actually not very Christmas-y but enjoyed nonetheless by both boys. Watching Charlie Brown Christmas is one of my favorite traditions and we all took advantage of extra snuggles and family time watching them together.

Wednesday, December 3rd
Happy third day of Christmas Jackson & Andrew! Santa will be here in just 22 days! You both are surely on the NICE list, so help Santa get ready by writing him a letter with your Christmas wishes while enjoying some homemade hot chocolate.

The boys looked through the toy magazines that have been arriving in our mail since early November and picked out their favorites.

Jackson took the task very seriously.

Andrew, not so much. As to be expected from a two year old, he pointed to about three things, scribbled on the paper and he was done.

Jackson dictated his letter to me and I wrote it just as he said it. I had to giggle when he listed out the nine or so things he wanted and ended it with "that's all". Hopefully he is not disappointed on Christmas morning! Sorry bud, no drum set. (Family, please don't get any ideas--the noise level in this house is quite high enough, thank you very much!)
